The streets are quiet. The moon shining a sliver of a path along the sidewalk; just enough to keep you moving, but cautious.

And then you wonder “what’s my pace?”

You fiddle with your watch to light up the display and in those seconds catch your toe on cracked concrete, sending you hurtling to the ground, thus derailing your entire run.

Ever had that happen? I have…and more than once!Watch where you're runningOr you’re on the track pushing till your guts want to come out, but not sure if you’re hitting the right pace, so you have to change your form to swing your arm up in front of your face…repeatedly!

Listen I puffy pink painted heart adore my GPS watches, but what if there was something else better?

Meet Oakley Radar Pace.

A development project two years in the making between Oakley and Intel. They didn’t rush to market, it had to meet their standards for all products:

  • Same lightweight Oakley feel
  • Same great optical features of Oakley
  • Easy to use
  • Logical to use
  • Performance enhancing

Oakley Rader Pace Review

What is Oakley Radar Pace?

It’s not a what, as much as a who…or maybe a combo of both.

It’s a coach in your ear and working out with you.
It’s a coach who gives you real time feedback on your cadence.
It’s a coach who tells you to pick it up or reel it back in.

FAQs

You mentioned this helping on my dark morning runs, but they’re sunglasses?
Touche. They also come with an interchangeable clear lens for morning runs or dark days.oakleyradarWhat’s the battery life?
Right now it runs 4-6 hours depending on the volume of music and what else might be running. The same can be said for the battery on your phone, as the two are constantly connecting through Bluetooth during the workout.

What’s this about zones?
Remember my post on VO2 Max and how that helps you know when you move from fat burning to carb burning and all about your intensity level? Well they have actually shown the Radar is just as accurate as one of those $200 tests! Pretty amazing! Thus it will tell you during any given workout if you’re pushing too hard, as the system continually learns more about you and your pace/effort levels.

Does it work with my watch, heart rate monitor, etc?
It’s been out a whopping two weeks, so they have a LONG list of desired integration and enhancements. For now it pairs with your HR strap, any foot pods or cycling sensors to give you that real time feedback. Unfortunately most GPS watches don’t output the data in a way that Bluetooth can read, so it’s coming from your phone and sensors in the glasses.

Can I load my own training plans?
Right now the Radar comes with a number of plans that aren’t just thrown together, but a combination of many of the top trainers in the world. They looked at what programs get the best results and allow you to put in your goal of speed, endurance or a specific race date (along with #of workout days, etc) and it will create your workout schedule.

Any issues? How do I update it?
It’s technology, so yes a few. iOS 10 was released the day the Radar went to market. Which means they’re looking in to updates to ensure a flawless delivery there and of course will always need to make updates. The updates are pushed to the glasses through the app on your phone, so no harder than any other update you do normally.

The only other drawback for me was that if I walked the glasses would pause the workout. I understand it’s a design focused on performance enhancing, but especially on the trails there is walking when it hits a steep rocky grade. I am guessing there will be settings for this in the future as well.

Can you believe the changes in technology?!

Would you use something like this?

Amazing! I wonder how these would work with different accents, I know the new GoPro struggles a little with the English accent!

Oh wow, that is pretty intense! I’ve gone in the direction of “GPS free” over the last year, but I can see a product like this coming in really handy if I ever decide to train for a specific time/PR race again!

Wow these sound so amazing!! The number of times (especially during races), when I have wished some one could just talk to me and tell me my pace or if I need to go faster, or should ease up a bit to meet my goals. This could be perfect!
