Yep, Puma has added yet another shoe to its lineup. We took the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro for some miles to see whether it’s worthy of a spot in your running shoe rotation. puma deviate pure

Puma has expanded the Deviate Nitro lineup with the new Deviate Pure Nitro, a daily trainer designed to handle a little bit of everything from easy runs, speed workouts and even those long walks.

With a versatile ride, comfortable cushioning, and a price point that’s not too high, this shoe aims to be an option for runners looking for a shoe that can cover most of their training.

But does it live up to that promise? Here’s our review of the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro and how it held up on the roads and dirt trails here in Colorado.

Who Is It Good For?

Who is the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro a good fit for? Let’s break it down with some common categories:
  • Wide Feet: Puma tends to run a little narrow, and this shoe stays true here. There’s also no wide available here, so it’s not ideal.
  • Heavier Runners: Yes, the PEBA foam underfoot is going to give you the extra cushion, but without feeling like a marshmallow
  • Long Runs: Will keep your feet happy and supported for many miles
  • Front of the Pack: It’ll be great to pick up the pace in workouts, but it lacks the amount of pop you’d want for race day.

Our Verdict

88%

The Deviate Pure Nitro is a comfortable, stylish daily trainer that can easily handle a mix of running and walking without missing a beat. While the narrower fit and less than expected pop held it back a bit in our testing, it’s still a solid option for runners looking for a reliable everyday trainer.

Puma Deviate Pure Nitro Overview

Open the box, and you’re greeted by a super-sleek, stylish, crisp-looking shoe. Puma’s design team nailed it with a design that practically screams, “wear me.”

On paper, the specs looked like a home run, too, so my expectations were definitely high when I laced up the Deviate Pure Nitro for the first time.

Now, don’t worry, this isn’t about to turn into a “great looking shoe, terrible ride” review.

My feelings on this one fall somewhere in the middle.

The ride was good. Not flat, not mind-blowing. It did exactly what I wanted a daily trainer to do.

I felt supported, the fit was comfortable, and I was able to go about my miles without really thinking about the shoe.

Will I add this shoe to my rotation? Yes.

Do I think it’s a shoe that will work well for a lot of runners? Also yes.

The only caveat is fit. If you typically need a wider fitting shoe, this may not be the best match.

But if Puma’s more standard, narrow fit works well for you, I think there’s a lot to like about what Puma has done here.

puma deviate pure nitro foam

I put the Pure Nitro through some speed workouts on both the road and the track to see if it had that extra pop Puma promises.

I hit all my paces, and the transitions felt smooth, but I never really felt any additional assistance from the shoe.

Everything flowed well, but I didn’t get that little bit of magic underfoot that I’ve found in other daily trainers recently.

What stood out to me more was the comfort. The shoe felt just as good at the end of the run as it did at the beginning, thanks to the Puma NITROFOAM.

In fact, I kept them on a few hours afterward while running errands, and my feet were still happy.

Since there’s no plate built into the shoe, it also feels more natural for everyday wear. If you’re looking for a shoe that can handle runs, walks, and plenty of time on your feet, the Deviate Pure Nitro can easily pull double duty.

puma deviate pure outsole

No matter what type of run or walk you decide to use this shoe for, the outsole is covered with PUMAGRIP rubber, which has built a pretty solid reputation for durability.

Translation? You should be able to rack up plenty of miles before noticing much wear and tear on the outsole.

It also provides plenty of traction when conditions aren’t perfect.

Whether I was running on wet pavement thanks to the early morning sprinklers or running strides on lightly packed gravel trails, I never felt like I was slipping or searching for footing.

The grip just quietly did its job, which is exactly what you want in a running shoe.

Quick Take

Cons

  • More narrow fit, not available in wide
  • White/see-through upper may get stained with colored socks

Puma Deviate Pure Nitro Fit

The fit of the Deviate Pure Nitro is pretty typical for the brand. I had no issues with my usual women’s size 11, though it felt a bit narrower than I typically wear.

If you need a wider midfoot or roomy toe box, this probably won’t be the shoe for you. But if you’ve run in Puma before, that likely won’t be a surprise.

The upper is made from a thin, breathable mesh, which is great for warmer runs.

The trade-off is that the bright white material is somewhat see-through, so colorful socks will definitely show through the upper.

Personally, that doesn’t bother me, but I know that may be a deal breaker for some runners.puma deviate pure heel

The tongue uses a gusseted design and sits a little higher than what you’ll find on many daily trainers.

I was initially worried it might rub or dig into my ankle, but thankfully, that never became an issue during any of my runs.

I have a feeling the Deviate Pure Nitro is going to be one of those shoes that grows on you over time.

My first few runs felt solid, but not necessarily memorable. Much like my experience with the Saucony Azura. The more I wore the shoe, the more I appreciated what it brought to the table.

Similar Shoes to the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro

Our team has tested a ton of daily trainers that feel similar, but different based on brand fit:

  • Saucony Kinvara 16 – Similar stack and a daily trainer that can pick up the pace
  • Hoka Mach 7 – Another similar in stack height, 5mm drop, easy miles to pick up the pace
  • Salomon Aeroblaze 3 – Really light weight for a daily trainer, nice cushion, 8mm drop

Sometimes the best daily trainers aren’t the ones that immediately wow you; they’re the ones you keep reaching for day after day because they simply get the job done.

I hope this review of the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro was helpful. I’ll be sure to report back once I’ve logged 100 miles in the shoe and let you know if my opinion changes.
