At first glance, the Brooks Ghost Max 4 looks like a totally different shoe from previous models. Our team put it to the test to find out what makes this max-cushioned daily trainer stand out.ghost max 4 review

I feel like every time we review a new Ghost Max, it’s a bit of a “let’s see if this one actually got better” moment.

At least first impressions were strong. Right out of the box, it’s clear Brooks put more thought into the design, and it finally feels like it can hold its own next to other running shoes out there.

But as always, looks come last; what really matters is how the shoe fits and feels.

There are a few small updates in the Ghost Max 4 that are supposed to make the ride even smoother.

Let’s see if the changes match what’s on paper once we put in the miles.

Our Verdict

80%

While we love the updated, stylish look of the Brooks Ghost Max 4, it’s still a chunky shoe that really only works for speed. It’ll be a good shoe if you’re spending a lot of time standing or walking around and one that’s likely to feel great for our heavier runners and back of the pack.

Who is it Good For?

Who is the Brooks Ghost Max 4 a good fit for? Let’s break it down by some common categories:
  • Wide Feet: The fit feels a little narrow compared to previous models, but Brooks typically is available in wider sizes.
  • Heavier Runners: Durability isn’t even a question here, especially with the updated outsole design.
  • Long Runs: It has just the right blend of cushioning to support you for long hours on your feet.
  • Front of the Pack: Keep looking, this is not going to be a shoe for you.

Brooks Ghost Max 4 Overview

For me, this is still a lot of shoe and not one I’d typically grab to head out the door for a run. What I did appreciate, though, was the balance in the cushioning. I wore it on a few walks and never felt like I was sinking in or that it was too firm.

It really hits the Goldilocks zone for a max-cushioned daily trainer.

If you spend a lot of time on your feet, prefer run/walk intervals, or just want a bit more support underfoot, this is definitely a shoe worth checking out. ghost max 4 overview

Can we take a second to appreciate the style upgrade Brooks gave the Ghost Max 4? Each version has looked a little better, and this one finally leans more toward modern and eye-catching rather than feeling like a geriatric shoe.

It also follows the design of the rest of the Ghost lineup, with that more detailed, sculpted foam underfoot. ghost max 4 tread

Brooks continues to reinforce the outsole in high-wear areas, adding a nice layer of durability where you need it most.

If you’re a heavier runner, that’s a big plus. This shoe is built to hold up over time.

Whether you’re running or walking, the outsole feels like it can keep up without wearing down too quickly. And if you’re more middle- to back-of-the-pack, it makes a really solid training partner for logging miles leading into a half or even a full marathon.

With the right mix of cushioning, durability, and now a more flashy look, it checks a lot of boxes for a max-cushion daily trainer.

Quick Take

Pros

  • Perfect blend of cushioning that is not too soft and not too firm
  • Wider base will provide the support you need with the higher stack height
  • A durable shoe that will last for many miles

Cons

  • It’s not a fast shoe
  • It’s a heavier shoe
  • Upper mesh is not super breathable

Brooks Ghost Max 4 Fit

I typically go up at least half a size in my running shoes for when my feet start to swell. That little bit of extra room was perfect for the Brooks Ghost Max 4.

I think that with the changes to the sidewalls, the fit was slightly compromised, making the shoe a little narrower than previous models. But not to worry, there’s still plenty of space in the toe box.

When it comes to the heel collar, Brooks didn’t change anything here, and there’s just the right amount of plush cushioning that feels supportive without being overdone.

During my walks, I was a little worried about the higher heel counter, but it never caused any issues.

You typically don’t see a pull tab on any shoes in the Ghost lineup, so this was a nice design change, especially if you need a little extra help slipping them on.ghost max 4 heel collar

The laces are on the shorter side, and this version skips the extra eyelets for a runner’s loop, but you can still take advantage of the one extra eyelet and adjust the lacing if you need a more secure fit.

Brooks running shoes tend to offer a few widths so that there’s an option for everyone. It’s one of the reasons we often recommend their shoes on our best-of lists.

Brooks Ghost Max 4 Feel

It may still be a bulkier shoe, but Brooks made a few tweaks that help the Ghost Max 4 still feel like a fan favorite.

The weight dropped slightly, though it’s not something you’ll really notice, especially if you didn’t run in the previous version.

But don’t get too excited about the weight drop here. The Brooks Ghost Max 4 is really built for easy miles, longer runs, and or walks. It’s not the shoe you’ll reach for if you’re trying to pick up the pace or throw in a few strides. brooks ghost max 4 glide roll

There’s the added signature GlideRoll technology paired with a wider base, which helps create smoother transitions and a more stable feel.

Even with the higher stack height, your foot and ankle don’t feel wobbly thanks to that solid platform underfoot.

If you prefer more ground feel, this probably isn’t the shoe for you.

The DNA Loft cushioning leans more toward protection, so you won’t feel much of the road or gravel trails beneath you.

Similar Shoes to the Brooks Ghost Max 4

We’ve tested a few max cushioned shoes that feel similar, but different based on the brand fit:

  • Saucony Hurricane: A little softer cushioning here, but still a beast of a shoe that’s going to get you through lots of miles.
  • Hoka Bondi: Very similar, moderate cushioned daily trainer, but just a little taller in stack height.
  • Saucony Triumph: Mac cushion that’s comfortable and energetic, but super lightweight compared to the Ghost Max.

There you have it, our Brooks Ghost Max 4 review.

As always, love to hear feedback if you’ve taken the shoe out or if there are other models you’re curious about.

one of the things we do know is that the fat pads in our feet do diminish with age, so it’s very possible that the change is why your feet got sore. Based on that the Ghost Max cushion could feel better, but ya gotta be open to it being different. It’s A LOT more cushion. The brain will quickly adapt to that underfoot, but it will feel different than the ghost that’s a bit more streamlined. I’d say it’s worth a try!
